New game! You wake up and are magically in a different year, what would be in your driveway? Keep in mind the age of your car, make, model, and market segment. If your particular model wasn’t available, go with the next closest thing. Got it?
Okay, you wake up in 1985? What is in your driveway?
Mine would be a ‘74 Cadillac Sedan deVille.

1985 BMW 325i Saloon. Closest thing BMW sold at the time to my M3.

This is the real answer.
My current car is a ‘97 A4, which translates to an Audi 80.

The 1LE package came out in 1988, so you know what that means....
YEA BUDDY IT’S MULLET TIME!!

1985? The exact substitute would be a 1983 Mustang GLX, but my tastes lean more toward the now extinct personal luxury cars, so more likely I would have had something like a Cutlass Supreme or a Toronado, if I could get over my FWDphobia.

1975 Ford LTD
Current 2005 Crown Victoria

The SHO would be a small block four door ‘66 Fairlane. The Capri would still be a Capri. Albiet less rusty and possibly even driveable.

Rallye 350
Only options would be a 4 speed, power steering, power brakes, and the heavy duty suspension packages.
Base everything else: front bench, rubber floormats, no a/c.
Based off a Cutlass rather than a 442 so oppressive insurance prices of the day wouldn’t hurt my wallet.
Cammy small block to survive the upcoming fuel crisis (because I’m from the future and know these things). Unlike the Chevrolet LT-1, the Olds makes power using maintenance-free hydraulic lifters and less radical compression which makes life a little bit easier.
Rubber floormats so if it leaks it won’t rust the floorboards, I restored mine and know carpeted anything just traps moisture in these things. No a/c because I never use the damn thing in my 72 Supreme anyway. PS/PB so I can drive it when my arms/legs get old and weak. Heavy duty suspension so it gets all the equipment a 442 would have. I save money, insurance payments and get a bright yellow performer with street presence and good performance that I can enjoy even when the gas is gone.
Other contenders would be the Cutlass Supreme SX for similar reasons, but it is more expensive and I’d have to get it with carpet and isn’t as radical looking as the Rallye 350. (I’m assuming I can get away with hopping only 2 model years and changing from a Cutlass Supreme to a Cutlass)

Dodge Omni GLHS because its a compact like the Dart and I’d rather have the insane Shelby version. All I’d add is a roof rack. (I know the pic is a GLH, best picture I could quickly find of the Omni)

Based on the rules, 1984 Dodge Ram.
However, those were the ugly (IMO) Rams and I don’t think I would have bought one. But, I have owned both a 1985 and a 1986 C10.
So probably something like this, which I actually owned in ‘02

67 Amazon. Awwww yeah.
Production that year overlapped that of the 140, but so did the 850 and the S70 in 97, and I have the previous model of those 2.

If we have to go with the closest thing to our car, mine would be the runaway Audi 5000S Quattro.

Also, my wife would drive a Hyundai Pony.

1985 ? Holden Commodore VK (hopefully a Blue Meanie).
Race on Sunday, sell on Monday? Heck yeah!
270bhp - I’ll have that.
5.0L V8 - I’ll take that too.
The nice burbly sounds of a bent-eight under the bonnet are happy and fill one with joy.

Currently drive a 2005 Nissan 350Z...
So in 1985 I’d be driving a 1975 Datsun 260Z and I am so okay with this I just can’t stop smiling
Also, Somersby cider and fresh Baja style fish tacos from the place on the beach are one hell of a drug

Let’s see, I have a 13 year old Crown Vic, so in 1985, it would be... a 13 year old Crown Vic (okay LTD but whatever).
If I can pick anything, I don’t know, but I’m assuming my car made the time-travel with me.

Very cool topic!
Hmm. Let’s see.
Current: 2008 Mazda3
So, a seven-year-old small hatchback Mazda. In 1985, that’d be a 1978 model.
A 1978 Mazda GLC, to be exact.

I’m not sure my 2015 garage is better than my possible 1985 garage. Where is this magical time traveling device?
Current: 2015 Ford Mustang 2.3 EcoBoost Fastback. 1985: 1985 Ford Mustang 2.3 SVO Fastback.
Current: 2014 Ford Mustang 3.7 V6 Coupe. 1985: 1984 Ford Mustang 3.8 V6 Coupe.
Current: 2008 Saturn Sky 2.0 Turbo Redline. 1985: 1973 Opel GT 1.9 I4.
Current: 1993 Toyota Supra 3.0 Turbo. 1985: 1967 Toyota 2000GT. (Would be blue but couldn’t find a decent picture of a blue 2000GT that wasn’t a diecast)

They were 16” x 7” HDT “Aero” rims; fitted as standard.

Hmm... I’d have a 1983 Mazda 323 (2013 Mazda3)
A 1963 Volvo Amazon Wagon (1993 Volvo 940 wagon)
And a 1956 Volvo PV444, since the Amazon wasn’t exported to the US until 1959. (1986 Volvo 740 sedan)

I’d have a 1986 Buick Skyhawk Turbo hatch in my driveway of it were the last 3rd of 1985.

Shhhhh, It would be a grey market car, I don’t particularly care for explosive cars.
